Oil Petroleum (derived from oil) provides around 40% of the world’s energy needs, mainly for cars. The US consumes around a quarter of all oil and generates a similar proportion of greenhouse gas emissions.

Regarding the Feb. 5 article, "Kicking into hydrogen gear'': I have known about the use of alternative fuels for some time now, cell technology and the status of their development from the article. Cars can be built to run off just about anything, but the greedy oil industry is willing to sacrifice our planet' being to fill its already bulging pockets.
